New Brunswick Debt Clock officially rolling backwards

Author: Paige MacPherson 2019/04/01

Canadian Taxpayers Federation Atlantic Director Paige MacPherson is congratulating New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs and Finance Minister Ernie Steeves on successfully rolling back New Brunswick’s debt clock.

“This week, for the first time in 13 years, New Brunswick’s debt clock is officially rolling backwards,” said MacPherson. “Reducing the debt is critical to the economic health of the province and begins to lift a massive burden off of taxpayers, who will pay nearly $700 million in debt interest payments this year.”

The CTF launched www.NBDebtClock.ca in 2014, urging then-finance minister Blaine Higgs to stop the debt clock.

“New Brunswick is the only province in Canada where the debt is currently going down, and that’s a significant achievement,” said MacPherson. “Provided the government stays on a steady course of debt reduction, taxpayers in New Brunswick can now watch their debt clock count down to zero.”

The CTF runs online debt clocks for every Canadian province, where taxpayers can watch their provincial debt increase – or decrease – in real time. The CTF also tours its physical debt clock across the country to raise awareness of government debt loads and the burden on individual taxpayers.

New Brunswick’s debt clock can be found at www.NBDebtClock.ca.
